Why Every Wedding Needs a Wedding Magician (Yes, Really)

Alright, so you’re planning your wedding... and you need great entertainment ideas.

WEDDING MAGICIAN?
Alright, so you’re planning your wedding. (if you haven't booked a venue yet then take a look at the list of my favourite local wedding venues in Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral at the end of this post)

You’ve got a scrapbook or if you’re fancy, a  Pinterest board filled with 974 types of table decorations you’ll probably never use. The DJ’s been booked, the cake’s been taste-tested (twice, for scientific purposes obviously...), and your cousin James has already asked if he can bring his new “influencer” girlfriend who may or may not livestream your vows.

But here’s the real question: Have you considered hiring a wedding magician?

No, seriously. A real magician. Not your uncle who pulls a coin out of kids’ ears at family barbecues. We’re talking cool, top-hat-optional, "How-the-on-Earth-did-he-do-that?!" type of magician.

By the end of this post, you’ll not only want a magician at your wedding—you’ll probably be emailing one while still in your pajamas.

Let’s Be Honest: Weddings Can Get… A Bit Boring

Don't shout at me!!!, but you know it’s true.

There are moments at every wedding—between the ceremony and the food, or while the couple is off taking 800 romantic sunset photos—where guests are just kind of… milling about. Politely sipping wine. Staring at the chocolate fountain. Wondering if they can nip to the car for a quick nap.

That’s where your friendly neighbourhood wedding magician swoops in.

A great magician can float through the crowd and turn that "downtime" into "wow time."

  • Card tricks? Check.
  • Mind reading? Of Course.
  • Slightly inappropriate jokes that go over Grandma’s head but have your friends in stitches? Guaranteed

Magicians Are Like Human Ice Breakers (With Decks of Cards)

Weddings are this beautiful mix of people who love you dearly and people who you’re not entirely sure how they’re related to you. Your Uni roommate is sitting next to your dad’s boss’s wife. Your school bestie is trying to make small talk with your third cousin who’s trying to not make it obvious he’s constantly checking the football scores

We all know that awkward staring competition as strangers gaze at each other across the room.

Enter: magician.

Magicians are professional minglers. They float from group to group, casually blowing minds, giving people something to talk (and laugh) about, and generally making you look like a genius for hiring them.

Suddenly, your guests aren’t nervously stirring their drinks and checking their phones—they’re saying things like:

“DID HE JUST PULL MY CARD OUT OF A LEMON?!”

The Icrebreaker is successful… The ice is shattered and all that remains is laughter and gasps of amazement everywhere!

 It’s Not Just Tricks—It’s a Performance

Some people still think magicians are just “that guy with a bunny in a hat.”

First of all—rude.

Second, modern wedding magicians are closer to comedians, actors, and storytellers rolled into one charming, sharply dressed package.

You’re not just getting some random bloke awkwardly fumbling with rope. You’re getting a legit performance. Most wedding magicians specialize in close-up magic—intimate, mind-blowing effects done right in front of your guests, often using their objects (like phones, rings, or signed cards).

And let’s not forget the mind readers. They’ll guess your mother-in-law’s childhood pet’s name or your best man’s PIN number (okay, maybe not that far). The point is—it’s interactive, and it makes your guests the stars of the show.

Your Wedding Photographer Will Thank You

Here’s something most people don’t think about: candid reactions.

You know those wedding albums full of stiff smiles and forced group shots? Now imagine instead:

  • Grandma gasping with delight as a magician vanishes her wedding ring and reproduces it in a flash of fire.
  • Your skeptical Best Man looking absolutely shocked as his £20 disappears.
  • Your flower girl’s look of amazement as some magic happens in her own hand.

These are the real moments your photographer lives for. Raw, joyful reactions. Not just smiles—memories. A magician doesn’t just entertain; they generate photo gold.

And let’s be real: you’re spending more on that photographer than you did on your first car. Let’s give them something amazing to work with.

They’re Incredibly Versatile

One of the best things about hiring a magician? They’re plug-and-play entertainment.

  • You don’t need a stage.
  • You don’t need a sound system.
  • You don’t even need electricity (perfect if you have decided on a rustic, ‘festival style wedding in a field).

Magicians can entertain guests during the drinks reception, between courses of the wedding breakfast, during the lull before evening guests arrive, or even at the childrens’ table to prevent total meltdowns during the speeches.

Also, if it fits a  20-minute stand up/ after dinner style act at the end of the wedding breakfast or before the DJ starts can really bring the whole group together.

It Makes Your Wedding Unforgettable (In the Best Way)

Let’s be honest for a moment.

Most weddings kind of blur together in guests’ memories. Don’t get me wrong—they’re beautiful, emotional, and meaningful… but after your fourth one in a year, they start to blend into one.

If you think back about the recent weddings you have attended. What memories stand out. It often isn’t the wedding favours, the flowers or the 6 foot chocolate fountain… It’s the ‘moments’ that are the most vivid. A great wedding magician helps create these!

Want to stand out? Hire a wedding magician.

People might not remember what flowers were in your bouquet. They will remember the guy who made their signed card appear in a sealed envelope in his wallet. They’ll tell their work mates. They’ll post about it. They’ll remember your wedding as the one that was actually different.

Because let’s face it—magic is rare. Most adults don’t see it up close. That alone makes it feel special.

And on a day that’s all about love, wonder, and shared joy... what’s more magical than actual magic?

Keeps the Kids Happy (and Out of the Cake)

Let’s take a moment to talk about the children.

They’re adorable, sure. But they also get bored fast. And a bored child at a wedding can be a haribo filled, wedding cake toppling  disaster waiting to happen.

A wedding magician is like a walking, talking, distraction device. Whether it’s balloon animals, sleight-of-hand, or turning napkins into butterflies (somehow), they’ll keep the little ones engaged and giggling.

  • Translation: parents can relax.
  • Which means: parents can drink.
  • Which means: chances of funky dance floor moves from cousin Malcom increases by 74%.

These are the wedding stats nobody talks about, but they matter.

Bonus: It’s Budget Friendly (No, Really)

Compared to a band, a fire-eating juggler, or an entire photo booth shaped like a vintage camper (yes, that’s a thing), a wedding magician is shockingly affordable.

Most close-up magicians work hourly or by set packages and can tailor their time to fit your budget. You could have them perform during just the drinks reception or go all in and have them mix and mingle all evening. If you wanted the complete package then maybe even consider a wedding emcee or host. Take a look here Wedding Emcee

And here’s the real bonus: guests will think you spent way more than you did. Magic just has that high-end, classy-but-cool vibe. Like a black tie tuxedo with converse.

What Real People Say (Spot the Cheeky Celeb one…)

"Thank you so much for entertaining our guests. We has so many people raving about how fantastic you were. I think it is the little touches that helped make the day so special and you were certainly one of them.”

Danny & Sarah Silcock

"Thank you very much for your input on Saturday. Emma and Marc's wedding was a very special day and your magical skills and sense of fun were terrific. Of all the events we had running through the day yours were the most talked about and we all loved it.

Thanks once again "

Peter Baxendale

Father of the Bride

“I would just like to thank you for everything on Saturday. The event was a great success, and it was nice to see you get some many tables on their feet applauding and cheering. I was certainly impressed with the magic tricks you performed at my table and was amazed at how you knew my card was the five of hearts."

Joanne Green

“Suberb!! Thanks you so much Andrew, that was real magic! We need you on the team!”

Sir Alex Ferguson

The Legendary Former Manchester Utd FC Manager

The Only Downside? You Might Be Upstaged

Okay, fine. There’s one tiny downside.

If your magician is too good, your guests might forget for a moment that you’re the ones getting married.

You’re in your wedding suit or your incredible designer dress, looking like a million pounds, and all anyone can talk about is how the magician guessed their PIN number using three rubber bands and a paperclip.

But honestly? If making your wedding unforgettable means sharing the spotlight a little, it’s worth it.

Plus, it just makes your planning look genius. You weren’t just about pretty tablecloths and good lighting—you brought entertainment that rocked!

Final Thoughts: Book a Wedding Magician (simples)

Weddings are about love, joy, and celebrating with the people you care about most.

A great wedding magician will tap into this and create really special moemnts

It’s playful. It’s surprising. It brings out childlike wonder in even the most sceptical uncle or overly cool bridesmaid.

So if you’re looking for something unique, memorable, and genuinely fun—do yourself (and your guests) a favour and hire a wedding magician.

Worst case? They pull a rabbit out of a hat.
Best case? They pull the best wedding ever out of thin air.

How a wedding host, emcee or toastmaster can help create a once in a lifetime spectacular!
By Andrew Green December 2, 2019
In early November I was delighted to be invited to perform at Denise Welch's Charity Magic Castle Ball at Manchester's Principle Hotel. The star studded ball was in aid of the Rochdale based charity GEM Appeal and managed to raise over £45,000 for the organisation. The theme for this year's ball was all about magic and the Magic Castle and so Denise asked me to help her magically appear for her grand entrance. I decided to custom build a brand new illusion for the event where Denise would magically appear from a box that fills with smoke. The atmosphere in the room was incredible and the audience reaction to the illusion was amazing! It was a wonderful night and it certainly was filled with magic! In the summer of 2018, I was approached to produce a new gothic medieval themed show for Lavender Hotels at their authentic medieval banquet hall at the Park Hall hotel which dates back to 966AD. The hotel is based in Lancashire next to what used to be the Camelot Theme Park and still runs medieval theme nights and weddings at the venue. With the current popularity with everything that is Gothic they were looking to house something special in their amazing venue. I worked with the team there to develop a live dinner show concept that features live stunts, escapology, fire eating, magic and comedy interaction all wrapped up in an immersive themed night that transports visitors into another world. Guests enjoy a delicious 5 course banquet, the amazing live dinner show and an after show party. It has been a delight to write, produce and direct the show from the ground up, bringing together the expertise of the stuntman team, fight choreographers, magicians, jugglers and comedians into the mix. The show currently runs monthly and is available to book here
London ghd Magic Event

Last month I was invited by amazing magician Michael J Fitch to join an elite group of magicians in London's Brewery to create an amazing night of magic for the leading hair care brand ghd. Their annual celebration awards dinner was hosted in the City Of London and was branded with a touch of #ghdmagic. I was delighted to be working with some of the leading leading magicians in the country such as Nicholas Einhorn, Paul Martin, Tom Wright and event host Michael J Fitch. It was an incredible evening of magical entertainment with some amazing sleight of hand close up table magic along with some incredible illusions live on stage from Michael. It was an honour to work as such a high profile corporate event such as this in London and to add my amazing close up magic to this exclusive event.

I am delighted to announce that I have been invited to become the resident magician at the exclusive Opera Grill in Chester city centre. This amazing venue plays host to some wonderful events and artists each week and I was thrilled to be asked to join them each Sunday in their music lounge and on their gorgeous roof terrace. I will be performing some amazing close up sleight of hand magic around the tables entertaining guests and diners each Sunday evening from around 5pm. It is a real delight to perform this type of magic as the reactions from spectators is always wonderful. It is the fact that the magic takes place right under their noses that makes it so powerful. Come and join in the fun! My close up table magic is just one element of the Sunday line up. Alongside me on the terrace will be the amazing guitar vocalist George who will be performing a chill out acoustic set along with the resident DJs who will create that relaxed Ibiza chill-out atmosphere throughout the summer. In the main Music Lounge we have performing the resident gospel choir who present their amazing live show with 3 piece band. It is truly not to be missed.
